A mild chemical peel is a non-invasive technique for restoring wrinkled, blemished, unevenly pigmented, or sun-damaged facial skin. Chemical peels can be used on any area of the body, the most common areas being the face, hands and chest.
A chemical solution is used to peel away the skin's damaged outer layers. The new cells and collagen are stimulated to produce a smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin surface. Each treatment is customised for patient skin type, specific problem areas and the delicate areas of the face. The depth of the peel is dependent on the concentration and type of acid, the duration of contact, and a person's skin type and sensitivity. Although chemical peels may be performed in conjunction with a facelift, it is not a substitute for such surgery.
Benefits of chemical peels include:
- Improve elasticity and firmness of the skin
- Increase the production of dermal matrix compounds
- Increase collagen synthesis
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Improve skin texture
- Reveal smoother, brighter, more supple skin with less pigmentation and fewer irregularities
- Promote the cycle of skin shedding and re-growth
